So two weeks ago one of my co-workers caught me lusting over engagement rings online.
This was her reaction: *crazy grin* UH OH!!!
This was my reaction: *quickly minimizes all windows* I DON'T WANT TO TALK ABOUT IT! I DON'T WANT TO TALK ABOUT IT!
But I do want to talk about it. I just didn't want to, you know, talk about it with my co-workers. I allowed them to ask ONE question: How long have you been dating? (Answer: 3 years.) They nodded and seemed impressed, but I could have sworn it was the amused, affectionate kind of impressed that really just means they think I'm adorable, all fantasizing about big-girl things like COMMITMENT and DOMESTIC BLISS.
Then my mom stumbled upon what probably looked to her like a guest list because... well, it kind of looked like a guest list (it was really just a list of all of the people we know, though) and according to my sister, thought the whole concept was all sorts of hilarious. Fabulous.
So, Discretion FAIL on my behalf, because I keep on browsing wedding blogs at work and leaving wedding-related stuff all over my house and telling every damn person I know that IT'S ON THE HORIZON. Even though it's not really on the horizon because it'll most likely be another two years before we actually tie the proverbial knot. Maybe I should just keep my mouth shut until it's a done deal.

"All we have to believe with is our senses, the tools we use to perceive the world: our sight, our touch, our memory. If they lie to us, then nothing can be trusted. And even if we do not believe, we cannot travel in any other way than the road our senses show us; and we must walk that road to the end." - Neil Gaiman, American Gods
Even when I'm single and claiming that I never plan to marry, I still occasionally look at wedding dresses and engagement rings online. And I have an account on a baby name website where I have a list of 300 of my favorite names.
ReplyDeleteYou're not alone.
I've been with my BF for 5 years and we haven't discussed marriage in any kind of serious way. Which, oddly, fills me with both relief and concern.
ReplyDeleteDoes your man read your blog, Melissa? Hope you've given him a head's up otherwise this entry may be a bit of a shock! Getting excited is good! I like looking at wedding photography websites to see the dresses and little quirky wedding ideas people have - we all do it! Hope it happens for you soon =)
ReplyDelete@Angela - I'm glad I'm not alone :)
ReplyDelete@Amber - That's probably for the best. Talking about it has opened up Pandora's box. (Hehe. "Opened up her box.")
@Michelle - He and I are definitely on the same page -- now it's just a matter of getting certain other people to flip to that page as well, haha!
I mean, you can always look at engagement rings for the sake of looking at engagement rings. Try to counter the "Aw, wook at her, so cute!" mentality from your co-workers by looking at vintage collections of rings that feature characters like Thor and Jesus.
